Help! I Know I Need Some Videos, But Where Do I Start?

If you’ve been thinking about creating a promotional video for your business, you’re not alone. Video is a powerful marketing tool and is an important trend for social media and websites. But where do you start? Here are five things to consider before you hit record. 🎬📹

1. Know your goal

Do you want to introduce your business? Show off a product? Share customer testimonials? A clear purpose will guide your content, tone, and video length. Don’t try to cram too much in. One focused message per video is plenty.

2. Think about your audience

Want to inform longtime customers, or attract clients from outside your area? Use language and visuals that resonate with your ideal customer. And yes, always keep it Canadian—our audiences notice when it’s not.

3. Keep it short and sweet

According to Online Business Canada, short-form video content had the highest return on marketing investment in 2024. A 30 to 60-second video works well for Instagram or Facebook, while website videos can be a little longer (but usually less than 100 seconds). Aim to be engaging right from the first few seconds.

4. Brand it properly

Your video’s design and graphics should reflect your brand colours, tone, and style. Make sure your logo appears, and that the vibe matches how you want to be seen—whether that’s friendly, high-end, playful, or professional. Include a way for viewers to reach you at the end, like a simple link or email address.

5. Don’t DIY everything!

It’s tempting to do it all yourself, especially with the AI tools available now. But remember, a good quality video can elevate your marketing, while one that seems cheaply made can undermine your effort. And AI videos don’t have the appealing authenticity of real ones.
